The Bug-Squashing Party

Is now underway. Look what we're finding on Elf's arm. SOMETHING in that bedroom is sinister and hungry! I hope we don't need to take this one to the doctor as well. Too late today to bring him!

  1. Sounds like you have a pest problem. I'm usually the one that gets biten at home too. My blood must be very yummy. I hope Emperor and Elf get better soon.

  2. Could you spray him all over with OFF or a similar bug repellent? I bet that would help a lot.

Also, I learned a trick traveling in various parts of the world. Sometimes microscopic bugs like to hide out in bed covers. A good way to deal with the problem is spray the inside of the sheets lightly with some bug repellent (even clean sheets, and even OFF would do). Then CLOSE UP THE SHEETS and wait an hour before bed. Result: no more waking up with bites (if he's been waking up with any).

If necessary, spray his whole room, including drapes and carpet (anyplace bugs might hide) and even OFF would do, it doesn't have to be something strong enough for cockroaches or anything. Then close up his room for an hour. Of course, air out the room VERY well before he goes in to sleep (but don't open the sheets until he's ready to get in). Repeat the treatment each seven days for about three weeks, if the problem continues.

    Good luck!!!

  4. OK, I am going to look around for OFF and see if I have any around!!

I can't imagine what happened because this bug thing happened RIGHT AFTER my major cleaning of that room. Moving everything, mopping, etc. They have hardwood floors and wood blinds, so it must be hiding in furniture or closet stuff. Or childrens' toys.

    IWW.

  6. We had bed bugs the last night in Italy... makes it hard to sleep when you keep wondering if something is crawling over you.

Ugh. May you eradicate the problem soon.

  7. The reason I recommended trying OFF spray is that being designed to spray on skin, I think it's a bit less toxic than products (especially around children) designed to kill bugs directly. I know it works because if you travel and spray your room with it, then close up the room, it still kills the bugs. If that doesn't work however, you could try some bug spray.

Also, if you feel something biting, even if you can't see it (like fleas are almost too small to see), spray it directly on your skin to kill what's there and biting. If you sprayed it thickly, you might want to wash it off after three to five minutes, so it doesn't sit on the skin, but that sometimes stops the biting by immediately killing whatever is doing it (especially with fleas).

It's also possible to get fleas in from outdoors, which can be eradicated with regular weekly treatment as I described above (it takes 3-4 diligent weeks if they are fleas--I hope they aren't, and they don't really look like flea bites which are very itchy and several in a row).

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
