Speaking of Taxes...

"Democrats have long been of the belief that you can raise taxes on business and they'll just pay it out of their profits. They don't seem to understand the connection between higher costs to the companies and higher prices to the consumers. They just assume that higher taxes and fees will be absorbed by the evil corporations. Consequently, any taxes on business are in reality a tax on you the consumer. You will pay the bill."

"They also seem to be strangely dim about the concept that whatever you tax you get less of. For instance, raise the capital gains tax and you will get reductions in capital investment. It works every time it's tried. Investors don't enjoy seeing the value of their investments destroyed and they will look for other avenues to keep their money."

Quote above from the Holy Coast blog. I'd agree with much of this quote but add the stipulation that this isn't just a Democrat sort of a problem. It's a voter sort of problem, as we are only getting the representation we as a nation have elected ourselves. That's why I think the idea that the economy and this and that that Obama "inherited" from Bush is all the Republicans' fault is just pure silliness as well.

  1. Well, while I don't think it's all Bush's fault..he had a Republican controlled Congress...and a Republican president, that inherited a billion dollar surplus...and left office with billions, nay, trillions of dollars of debt..? How is that not Republican doing? Whose doing was it? Really?

  2. This from my sister-in-law's blog back in October:

    George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years.

    The first six the economy was fine.

    A little over one year ago:

    1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;

    2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;

    3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.

    4) the DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000 +

    5) American's were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations overseas, living large!...

    But American's wanted 'CHANGE'! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes--we got 'CHANGE' all right.

    In the PAST YEAR:

    1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;

    2) Gasoline hit over $4 a gallon;

    3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase);

    4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS and prices still dropping;

    5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.

    6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~ $2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

    YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE...AND WE SURE GOT IT! ....

    REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANY OF THESE ISSUES, ONLY CONGRESS.

    AND WHAT HAS CONGRESS DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

    NOW THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT CLAIMS HE IS GOING TO REALLY GIVE US CHANGE ALONG WITH A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS!!!!

    JUST HOW MUCH MORE 'CHANGE' DO YOU THINK YOU CAN STAND?

    (Republicans' doing? I think not.)

  3. I was extremely disappointed in Bush signing the bailout for Wall Street before leaving office. And while I am not happy with things Bush did, and I am certainly not happy with what the Democratic-controlled Congress has done and continues to do... playing the blame game does us no good. I don't really care at this point whose fault it is. What I care about it what's being done about it now? Where's the change that Obama promised? On the campaign trail, I heard him say he would go through every piece of legislation line-by-line and veto anything that had earmarks in it. He most certainly has not done that. Everything he has done in the last five weeks since he's been in office has made our situation worse. So, okay, I concede that he didn't inherit the best economy after Bush; however, he's certainly not making it better. We have slipped further and further into recession because of his trillion dollar spendulus package, etc., etc. I can't stand to listen to anymore of the rhetoric. I want my country back! I want a Republic back. I want what our Founding Fathers intended -- that the government works for the People. This government isn't listening to the People!

  4. Mrs. C., you'll appreciate this:

    My six year old son told me the other day, "Mom, since Obama's been president, I don't feel anything different. I don't see any changes."

    LOL!

  5. LOL Daja, your kids are all *so* smart and cute! I love seeing their little pics on your blog.

    I feel some changes going on, but I'm not going to say they're all Obama's doing. :p

    Betty, I *don't* think that it's Republicans' doing. Or Democrats'. I really do think this is a voter issue, or the Democratic and Republican parties would both LOOK different to attract voters. (Maybe we are playing chicken and egg when we talk like this LOL)

    Honestly? I think it is a big problem that our economy became dependent on people spending money they didn't have.

    Lisa, I felt betrayed that Bush signed in this prescription drugs for "seniors" thing. I felt MORE betrayed by the bailout. This entire *mindset* is ridiculous.

    I think the politicians want their jobs, so they'll keep telling us what we want to hear. I think that's why Mr. Hopenchange got into the presidency... but when he got in, suddenly the bad news about the economy starts to come from his mouth as well. You can't say he had no clue before he became president (what would that say for his intelligence?).

    But I don't blame him for the economy, though I think his answer to it is short-sighted if the fundamental problem is the fact that we're dependent upon spending money we don't have.

  6. And the voter problem goes back to our poor education system. If students are not encouraged to think for themselves, cannot learn math and basic economics, and fail to understand our government and constitution, then we end up with ill-informed voters unable to think for themselves.

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
