I Wish You Were Dead

... is the message Kalanit Levy is going to hear when she finds out her parents sued for "wrongful birth."  They claim they would have aborted the kid had they known she had a form of Down Syndrome.  Boo-hoo, they need $3 million!!  And the judge in the case doesn't want pictures of the "parents," Ariel and Deborah Levy, circulated because they've been receiving death threats.

Irony much?

Now, true... the test to detect Downs Syndrome in utero was botched. And I'm thinking if Kalanit died because of some medical mishap because they didn't know she had Down Syndrome, I'd feel truly sorry for the parents and be very cool about the $3 million verdict.

But "wrongful birth?"  And juries go along with this now?  Sickening.

    1. I was more angered than sad... but sad can be a good reaction too... still within the range of humanity, eh? :(

  2. I'd be curious to know how they will stand before Him one day and answer for seeking monetary compensation for being blessed with their child...

  3. Bonnie: What's next?

    After birth abortion.

Ethicist debated it on the BMJ Journal of Medical Ethics, not expecting it to be opened up to the public. (It's no longer available). There is a discussion here http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/she-the-people/post/after-birth-abortion-can-they-be-serious/2012/03/03/gIQADgiOsR_blog.html

    1. I guess I don't see the difference between after- and pre-birth abortion. The only salient medical point that might be made is that there are rare cases where the life of the child endangers that of the mother...

  4. Oh, how sad. My friend's 10 baby was down syndrome and they love her like CRAZY. She is so incredibly sweet and all kids carry her everywhere and play with her. They truly see her as a gift.

  7. I first read this story when our minister posted it on FB. He and his wife had a DS baby in September and she is so loved by everyone. As Virginia commented, DS children are truly gifts.

    1. Yep. All children are! Though I can understand sadness, feeling gypped, anger, all kinds of stuff. But going before a court and claiming you are owed money because you coulda had a fair chance at killing your kid... whoosh. I can't imagine doing that and pretty sure you can't either.

  9. WOW. Even when I had a late pregnancy amnio (after 27 weeks and only so I could be cleared for a homebirth) the hospital and my midwife were very clear that just because our child's amnio was normal did NOT mean that there was not still a risk of a disease, or abnormality. Because it is obvious what their intentions in having the testing were, I think they could have given the parents a small reimbursement for their time and expenses to that date, but more importantly I think part of that decision should have included taking away parental rights for the child and giving the child to somebody who deserves such a special gift!

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
