Handcuffing Children at School

If parents handcuffed their 5-year-old for throwing a tantrum, it would be called child abuse. How is this OK if police...

My note: It really sounds as though this child needs school-at-home via the internet, or an alternative placement.  For them to allow the situation to escalate so shows that they have lost control.   The problem with the he-said she-said in incidents like this is that often, the teachers are goading the children, or do not know how to deal with meltdowns before they escalate, or the child is placed in the cheapest environment possible and the teacher is overwhelmed but well-meaning.  You just can't tell from an article in the news.

  1. I didn't hear about this but I would say there was more to the story, the press don't always get the whole story.

  2. I don't want to seem callous, but I know a few kids who could use handcuffs and leg shackles too, with a gag.
In this situation however, there has to have been a better solution.

  3. This is happening more and more. It sets up a strong distrust toward the police and then we wonder why people are fleeing the police only to get shot in the back.

  4. Well... the kid is FIVE. I doubt he's waking up, thinking of ways to antagonize his teachers. The school probably needs to consider a different placement, well before things get this out of hand. Usually kids acting out to this degree are not the result of poor parenting at this age. I mean, it could be. But I doubt it.

  5. Homeschooling of some sort would be a good alternative. Schools do have a problem, since teachers can't always control/discipline children like a parent could, but handcuffs on a five year old do not seem right.

    1. I am hearing various reports online that the young man's IEP was not followed, thus making this a federal problem. Hope it gets sorted out.

  6. No matter how out of control he was, and it sounds like the ADULTS around him at the time had no idea how to calm the situation down, calling the police was OVERKILL. Then for the police to handcuff and shackle him??? OUTRAGEOUS. He is a child. A small, confused, out of control CHILD. Poor BIG police officers... scared of a freakin' 5 year old! No wonder the police in the USA have such a bad reputation if this is how they treat a child. I'm surprised they didn't SHOOT HIM.

    1. Hey, now! They wait until young black men are teens before they do that! :/

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
