What's RIGHT About the State of Missouri.

Bought this book to do our science unit on DINOSAURS. I have some other books from the public library, but they were all full of fanicful notions about dinosaurs living millions of years ago, etc. etc. I appreciate our state laws here in Missouri on homeschooling. I do 1,000 hours annually, 600 of which must be "core" (reading, English, social studies, math, science) and 400 of whatever electives I choose if I wish. I think we'll wind up with only 300 hours of electives and maybe 950 in core at the rate we're going... but only 1,000 required total. No registration. No tests. The state only gives me the GUIDELINES that say how many core hours to teach per year. They do NOT dictate my curriculum. I could teach a first-grader high school math if I wished, or vice versa. When you think about it, would you have it any other way? Would you want the state to dictate what must be learned by each child and by what age? I am very grateful for the freedom we have in Missouri to teach whatever we wish to our children. Incidentally, I like this book very much. I'll have to write a review of it later as we progress through it.

  2. Hey we have this book and my kids love it. One other book that we have that my 11 yo like is Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation. by Dennis R. Peterson.
Dillon loves to check out Dinosaurs book from the library and now he likes to find what he calls "all those stupid statements" in them.
One other book we have is Noah's Ark and the Mt. Ararat adventure. It is by the same people of the book that you have.

  3. One more thing. We lived in Missouri when I was 15 and homeschooled there too. My mom enjoyed the laws there as they were similar to the ones here in Oklahoma (very easy on homeschoolers). We lived in St. James, which is just outside of Rolla.

  4. My state's homeschool laws are moderate- not the best, not the worst.

What I always found amusing was the 900 hours required, as if kids in PS are spending that much time learning- half of class is taking attendance and crowd control.

We have to submit a standardized test each year, but my kids have never had any trouble with those. I don't practice 'grading' at all, so it is a bit aggravating to have to jump through such a stupid hoop.

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
