Woodjie

has just been diagnosed with moderate to severe autism. But the team remarked that for having this degree of difficulty in his daily living, he has VERY good eye contact. Hey, it's better than good; admit it. It's a big deal. I figure that if I can get him LOOKING over to what I want him to see at least a good part of the time, that I will be able to communicate with him more. He can now say "warrr" for water when he wants a drink. What he really wants is "juice," but he can abandon hope on that most of the time. He would drink gallons of juice and play "too-too sanes" and "ah-loons" all day if he could.

  1. Oh, he is so adorable! I love his glasses. Are those his, or is he borrowing them?

  7. His smile just lights up the whatever space he's in, doesn't it?

  8. Not only is he good about looking at you, he can share joint attention by wanting to show you how he looks in glasses. That is another biggie. He may be nonverbal but he has a lot going on!

  11. Woodjie is gorgeous! I so agree with what everyone has said--just look at the way he interacts with you and the way he loves Rose! I have known autistic kids his age who wouldn't let anyone touch them without screaming their heads off, they would never curl up on the couch for nap with their little sister.

I know that I only have a microscopic taste of what it's like to parent a child that needs special attention, but I find strength in you. You are an awseome Mom and it shows! You inspire me to never give up. Thank you for that.

It would not surprise me if Woodjie was a functioning, verbal, adult someday and he will have his Mother's love and care to thank for it. I know that the diagnosis this past week was hard, even though it was expected, but that doesn't have to be the be all-end all to everything. We continue to pray, to hope, and to progress.

Love you Mrs. C! I couldn't live my life at the moment, if I didn't know you.

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
