Remember, these policies were instituted under Hitler. Hitler did understand one thing very clearly, and that was that educating a young child forms ideas in his or her mind that will last a lifetime. Now, you and I both know that kids can reject the things they have been brought up in, but the ideas are still there.

I know some of you are asking as you are reading this ... why fight this? Who cares if kids all go to public school? What's so bad about public school? It was good enough for me/ my kids/ whatever... I would just counter that the children ought to belong to the PARENTS.

But, you may say, some parents will abuse their kids. Some parents would never educate their kids. Some parents are just plain messed in the head. Yep. And the children belong to those parents. They shouldn't be wards of the state unless some extremely heinous crime has been committed, and then only under due process of law. (In my mind, due process of law would entail actually following the fourth amendment, getting a warrant, etc., and not sending little Molly Miss Social Worker... age 23 with no children... out to "evaluate" your home)

I'm concerned at the trend lately that children belong to the state, and you must give a child an upbringing that is in line with what your state wants. You must teach them tolerance so that they don't offend anyone, or use their religion to justify "discrimination." You need to teach them respect for people of all races and cultures, even if a particular race or culture has declared jihad on your people. And certainly if you're a Christian you ought to love your neighbour enough to pay for their sex ed classes and condoms in public schools. What is wrong with these fundamenalist Christians who disagree??

  1. C - I think that by "Hitler-era" they mean in reaction to Hitler and the separation he created between Jews, Christians, gays, you name it. They are trying to keep this from happening again by forcing togetherness in schools so that prejudices cannot be so easily started due to ignorance about other ethnicities and religions. They are afraid of separatist groups, such as white supremists who keep their kids home because they don't want them interacting with "niggers" (their term, not mine). The SS was continued by conditioning kids who were "brainwashed" into thinking that Jews really were less than human. These kids then grew up and "staffed" the SS. The Germans are hoping to keep this from happening again by forced schooling.

  2. I'd recommend looking a bit more into the HSLA website, or even more secular resources if you prefer, on the history of education in Germany. To my understanding public schooling was a requirement under Hitler and simply was never changed. Many Christians, however, do not appreciate some of the things these schools teach and they have no viable alternative for their children.

But we go back to the fundamental question of WHOSE child it is. Who should decide what fundamental teachings the child learns at an early age?

If you are saying that the German state today should have that say, then it follows naturally that the German state YESTERDAY should have had that say in childrens' lives. It is either ok for the state to TOTALLY control the education of ALL children (and we can debate on that!), or it is NOT ok for the state to totally control the education of all children (and we can debate on that!).

OK I found a link specifically outlining the fact that state schooling was instituted under Hitler.

  4. "the government 'has a legitimate interest in countering the rise of parallel societies that are based on religion….'"

Since you are going to argue the point...the above quote backs up what I was saying about the government being afraid of separatist groups, but you are right when you argue that government and the educational system does not have the right to control the beliefs of the children and what they are taught. That bit about bringing the religion into line with the education system is going a bit far. As for the mandatory schooling being created by Hitler - all the article said was that Hitler created the Ministry of Education in 1937 for the purpose of creating a united community within its population of children. It did NOT say that he instituted the mandatory attendance of said school. Although mandatory attendance does follow that line of reasoning of creating unity in the community and controlling what kids are taught. It is very subtle.

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
