CHILDREN at Parent-Teacher Conferences??

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21581575

This is foolish. Of *course* children ought to be able to go to these conferences and hear what the teacher has to say about them. I think I have brought my older children to every conference once I felt that they could sit through it constructively. I've seen a few teachers express surprise at Patrick's conferences this fall... "Oh, you're BOTH here?"

The way I figure it, Patrick is 14. Really, I'm mostly going to these conferences to show support for HIM in HIS endeavours in school, and hear if there's anything I can do to help him do well. But it's his education. He knows he has five more years before he is finished with high school. That's it. Mommy will not be picking his college for him, although I imagine we'll be talking a lot as he gets older about the fact that no, we are not cashing in our retirement and refinancing the house so he can go. We'll have to work out what is an affordable sacrifice for our family, and then PATRICK will have to make a decision on college based on how much debt HE feels like taking on.

I've seen some interesting online colleges, and I've also seen some cheaper Christian colleges out there that are not accredited. It will be a hard decision. Why would I NOT want him in on his own parent-teacher conferences? I was surprised at the very small number of students at the junior high attending their own conferences. If nothing else, at that age I'd want to hear what the teacher is telling them about me... isn't there some sort of Constitutional right to face your accuser in court? LOL

  1. Agreed. Been there too and I feel my children need to hear when they're doing well as well as when they need to shore it up a little.
