A talk show featuring council candidates for the city of St. Cloud abruptly ends when the host asks about the candidates' stance on issues such as gay marriage and abortion. Apparently, it's totally irrelevant how someone feels on these issues. We're supposed to vote for them based on their likeability, or the tie they're wearing that day... or toilet paper fiscal management issues.
You know, when our city was electing city council members, a number of them went door-to-door and I asked them if they were Democrats or Republicans. One refused to answer and said the same dog-poo quoted above... that it isn't relevant at ALL and we can't label PEOPLE based on party.
Oh, reeeallly??? Maybe not eternally... I'm sure in 200 years the "Republican platform" will look different than it does in 2007 should it still exist. But you can't tell me that it doesn't help define the candidate for the voters... package him, if you will. And yes, I ask specifically about how the candidates feel about abortion. I want to know!! I don't care if it *never* comes up in city business. I want the people I elect to have some morals and maybe even a backbone. It would also be nice if I had a fool-proof scan for bathroom homosexuality as well, but we do the best we can with the information we have at the time.
So anyway...
What's wrong with a talk-show host asking these questions and letting the voter decide? I don't get it.
