Babies and Shopping Carts

Don't pop your infant seat into the front end of a shopping cart!  A baby has died after the seat fell out with the child inside.  I think almost every parent does this at some point, so I'm reposting this story even though it's a few years old.  The story is making its rounds on facebook again for some reason, and because the news article cribbed her facebook picture for its story, this poor mom is receiving a bunch of new and odd "friend" requests.  People are weird.

  1. Shopping carts are fairly deep, I don't see how a seat with child could fall out just by bouncing over a speed hump.
Plus, all carts have either baby seats with seatbelts right by the handle, or a seat for older babies/toddlers, again right by the handle.

    1. The way the carts are designed here, I could EASILY see death happening with a speed bump. I think the mom must have thought since other people pop their kids up like that, it's safe. It just isn't. :(

  2. This child was in a car seat that detaches from the base. The car seat was propped at the front of the shopping cart... on top of the seat for older babies. The car seat base likely did not have a way to use the safety belt on the shopping cart. I have seen a lot of babies sitting up there in their infant carriers.

I wore my nephew until he was old enough to sit.

    1. I usually brought the stroller in. The danger is more that I will put a shopping item in the top sunvisor or bottom basket and forget it. So I always checked before I paid.

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
