Snap Circuits!

I was somewhat reluctant to buy this product because let's face it: it's expensive and you just never know if it will become a favourite or "keep in the closet and give away later" sort of thing. This is a *favourite* and if you're at all thinking about getting some sort of fun science-y kit for your child this year, this would be the one. The box says 8 and up and I think that's about right. Our Snap Circuit set came with three books. Every experiment has an OBJECTIVE clearly spelled out, a description, and a very clear illustration. So you bet I'm counting the time Emperor rigs these things up with Elf as his homeschool time. We are on Experiment #7... out of 500 or so. Yes, once I decided to go ahead and GET a set, I wanted a set that would have pretty much everything I needed unless I got super-super into it years down the road. I learnt my lesson after buying a *little* Erector set. You can build the bitty truck and then... well... you can build the bitty truck again.

  1. PS If you do elect to get a kit like I did, you may wish to tape the piece layout guideline to the inside of the box as I did. That's a paper you don't want to lose.

PPS. That little rotor thing flies if you flip the switch properly.

  2. Cool. I always loved these electrical project cuts as a kid.
When do you get the Gilbert Chemistry set .. and let them blow up the playroom?

  3. Dad, I'm thinking a few boxes of baking soda, some vinegar, a roll of paper towels and a couple boxes of Ziplock bags, and you have an afternoon right there. Ever made "bombs" by putting lots of baking soda in a tied up paper towel, zip fast into vinegar in a ziplock, throw and watch explode... yayy! :)

I got a little rock set, though, and they're expensive... can't imagine what a REAL chemistry set runs.

  5. That looks like so much fun! I want one. I wondr if they're available out here in Aus and if they're called Snap Circuit or something else. I'll have to print the picture and take it to our biggest toy store.

  6. Very hands on...smart mama. Wish I'd have done something like that for Ben. He loved the project learning.

  7. I'm glad to see the boys are enjoying this - I've been very tempted to get one for my son. We love this sort of thing around here, but it's hard to know how things will stand up with the wear and tear my kids inflict on stuff.

Bringing Garbage Home

Some people up the street were throwing this table away. It was in pretty bad shape and one of the legs was off. I've glued the leg back...
